Ontario's Graduated Licensing System
Ontario uses a graduated licensing system to help new drivers gain experience in a safe and structured way.
After getting your G1 licence, you normally need to wait 12 months before taking your G2 road test. If you successfully complete an approved Beginner Driver Education (BDE) course, this waiting period can be reduced to 8 months.
Once you have your G2 licence, you must wait at least 12 months before you can take the G road test to earn your full G licence.
That means the minimum time from G1 to a full G licence is 20 months with an approved BDE course, compared with 24 months without BDE.

What is Begineer Driver Education (BDE)?
A Beginner Driver Education (BDE) course is an MTO-approved program that provides at least 40 hours of instruction. It helps new drivers build the knowledge, skills and confidence they need for a lifetime of safer driving.
Successful completion is recorded on your driver’s licence history, can reduce the G1 waiting period by four months, and may make you eligible for an insurance discount (depending on your insurer).
